My heart is racing, I'm breathing heavy, and I'm scared beyond belief! It's that time again for a breast ultrasound.

Back in March I found a small lump in my breast. I have fibrocystic breasts (big term for benign lumpy breast tissue). All the women in my family have this same condition. Anyway, back in March they did an ultrasound of my breasts and they were able to visualize the "lump" that I had found. It turned out to be a cyst (6mm in size). The doctor said that cysts are benign pockets of fluid that occur with a woman's hormonal cycle. As much as this was a relief, she said that we would have to do another ultrasound in six months to make sure it hasn't grown in size.

Well, here it is: six months later and it took me 1.5 hours to get the nerve to pick up the phone to make the appointment. I finally did and now I'm on the verge of a panic attack! I keep thinking the worst. I know they have to "double check" but if they were so sure it was only a cyst back in March, why are they "worried" about looking at it again?!

I do monthly exams on myself and the cyst is still there but I also feel one on the other breast in the same location. What are the chances of that? Another thing is that my breasts start to hurt (especially the one with the cyst) mid-cycle until after my period comes.

I know that my worring won't change the end result but I can't help it. I'm so scared to be called by the doctor to be told that I have breast cancer. I know that being 31 years old puts me at a lower risk but women in this age group has been known to get breast cancer and this absolutely scares me to the point of tears! My grandfather's sister (my great-aunt) had breast cancer at age 34. She's 53 now and cancer free but aren't survivors the lucky ones or do medical advances really have a handle on breast cancer? My doctor said that having a great-aunt doesn't really put me at risk like a first degree relative would so she's not too concerned about that.

I know there's nothing any of you can do but I just needed to vent my fears amongst those who can share some encouraging words. Thanks for "listening" and sorry this was so long!

I really ought to read and reread my signature quote below, huh?
