It's a best seller, and has been in print for thousands of years! It's called The Bible. -11:11

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened." - Matthew, a disciple of Jesus

Indeed, the Bible is a wonderful ancient text to read. However, I also want to read ancient Vedic texts (such as the Rig Vedas and the Upanishads) and the works based on Siddhartha Gautama's (the Buddha's) teachings. I also want to read books on Wicca, ancient folk traditions from around the world, New Age, Gnosticism, secularist philosophy, creation stories from around the world, ancient "mythology" from around the world, among other things. I believe that one of the only ways to truly know about other religions is to read their holy texts and proses. I have a lot on my plate, so wish me luck! Big Grin

P.S: I want to complete the Bible, but it might take years to complete, being about 2,000 pages and all! Any recommendations?

It is not difficult to acquire a pamphlet that gives you a schedule for reading through the Bible in one year. There are also Bibles set up with dates for the section or scripture to read each day. It's a great goal. Good luck.

You know, I just realized something: the best book of all is our existence, which isn't really a book, but bear with me. Our minds are filled with many words, traveling at amazing speeds all the time. As someone once said, "When an old man dies, a library burns down along with him." Our minds are the greatest books of all, but the Bible definately makes it into the Top 10 with ease!

Gaarden,
For me, the bible isnt a book, unless you havent met God, then its just another book. But, if you know God personally, with your relationship, then its the word of GOD, and is filled with knowledge, and wisdom and love and a guide to being whom we should be. I love Pslams 129, its a very personal pslam to each person who really wants to know what God knows about us, from the tiniest thing to the most intellectual thoughts, God knows your going to think it, before you ever do. There are so many HEALING scripture in the word of God and most people dont even realize that. Its very hard to give YOUR will to GOD, because we in our humanness think we can fix or solve it all, but there comes a point where some realize that ONLY GOD can give us peace and strength, and courage to fight or to do whatever is needed to be done for our lives, and thats really called TRUST!!

Well, I can see that you are a conservative/fundamentalist/evangelical/protestant Christian, Nelly, and you are pretty much the opposite of who I am faith-wise. I appreciate your concern, however, I am in no need of "saving," and nobody else is, really. I have faith in myself and I have faith in the good works of people, but that's where it ends. As an agnostic, I can neither accept or reject your beliefs, due to my open-mindedness and questioning capacity: however, I still don't appreciate your attempts to convert me to your conservative/fundamentalist/evangelical/protestant Christian way of life. As long as what a person believes in doesn't cause harm to anybody else in ANY WAY, let them believe what they want to believe in peace, ok? Sorry I had to say it like that, but I don't like it when I go to a forum and am told that I am inferior, or that what I believe in is wrong. Would you like it if a strong atheist was harrassing you all day? Probably not...

Gaarden,
Forgive me if it sounded as if i were trying to )convert or save you)it certainly wasnt my purpose, i was just adding my opinion to a quote you made about the bible being a book, which yu havent even read all the way through yet. You are more than welcome to believe whatever you want to beleive, we have a God given right to do that. We were all made by the same (GOD) or higher being i guess you would call it, and he never makes junk, therefore no one is inferior except in thier own mind. You were voicing yur opinion on God and ancient religions etc. when you do that, you will get a variety of comments, doesnt mean people are saying you are inferior and you havent offended me at all. Im very glad its not UP to me who beleives in God or Not, thats up the God, but as a beleiver in GOD, im so excited about sharing him with others. I hope i didnt offend you Smiler nelly Ps. i hope you finish one day the bible, the whole thing, you might just change your mind Smiler

I have been reading the Bible, and I do plan on completing it in due time: however, the more I read the Bible, the more confused I get. Some passages promote tolerance of others and understanding: others promote the killing of others for beliefs different than themselves. Also, the more I read it, the more I can see WHY there are so many different kinds of beliefs about the Bible: different interpretations of conflicting passages. I think that my mind will change, but it will only change because I'm enlightened as to why Christians believe what they do, and which passages in the Bible support their beliefs. I don't think that I'll change into a Christian though: I can't accept or reject anything as true or false, you know. I like the Buddhist idea that everything is illusion except suffering, but it is still too narrow-minded for the likes of me.

P.S: The Bible itself is indeed a book just like any other. However, just like any other book, what you take from the book after reading it transcends the mere confines of book-form. It becomes a part of your mind and, coincidentally, becomes a part of your beliefs and practices.
