The title of the book is "I don't want to talk about it" subtitled "overcoming the secret legacy of male depression".
This is a wonderful book by Terrence Real so full of exception insight into male depression. I recommend it to any man and couple where the husband is battling with depression. It will encourage the man to face his (emotional) challenges, and develop those skills that he never developed, rather than passing it on to the next generation. |

When I finish reading it I'll definately let you all know how it goes. It's on my desk right in front of me, and it's next in line to be read. (I love reading, and sometimes buy more books than I can keep up with.
Hi Don, I'm a teacher in Japan, but my wife isn't so it could be a different Frank pehaps? Take care, Frank |

Well I finally got around to reading it!!!
Thanks Peter Pan for recommending it. It came at a much needed time for me actually - perfect timing! I have been working through the process of forgiving my father for his past behavior, and this was just what I needed to help me understand something about him. To be totally honest, for the first time, I could see the man behind the monster. The book raises so many issues that are definately male specific, and I could relate to so many of the themes discussed in the book. I learnt alot about myself, about myself as a man, through reading this book. I found some parts of the book that I didn't relate to, but found it interesting to learn about what happens in some mens lives. In the parts I did relate to however, I was glued to the book, and couldn't put it down. There were many parts which really got down to the 'nuts and bolts' of some of my own issues with my father, which I never thought someone elses experiences could come close to explaining. But that's why this book is called 'I don't want to talk about it.', us chaps often don't/won't talk about depression. The book is very helpful in showing the particularly male aspects of male depression. The author talks about covert and overt depressions, which I can relate to alot. I highly recommend this book too, but it may take a little patience to find the parts/case studies in the book which relate the most to your own experience. This message has been edited. Frank -
I am glad that it helped you put the relationship with your dad in perspective, and how it affected and still affects your live. Sometimes it is through pain, sadness and suffering that we discover the depth of our (unexpressed and unexplored) emotions. take care Peter Pan |
