I have heard a lot of people recommend her books. Can someone give me some titles of her books and tell me why her books are so helpful?

Thanks,
AnnieG

"hope and help for your nerves"and "peace from nervous suffering" both Claire Weekes books.

Claire Weekes' books are the best when it comes to the symptoms of anxiety, panic, agoraphobia...
When you read her books, you will see why they are cherished among sufferers.

Her books have changed my life and many others' here. I orginally read them through the local library but loved them so much I had to buy them for my own.

I agree with sunset 34's comments - you really have to read the books to find out how good they are.

To give you an idea of why I like them: When you read her books, it kind of feels like Claire Weekes is sitting next to you, talking to you very matter-of-factly. Soothingly, too, but matter-of-factly. She explains symptoms, why you have the symptoms, and how her method really helps.

To give an example, during the worst of my agoraphobic days, if I had an errand to run, I would "drive" the errand in my head. (I feared driving unless I had another adult in the car with me. I was pretty much ok with someone else driving.) During the run through in my head, I would imagine all sorts of horrible things that could happen, how awful I'd feel, how bad the anxiety was making me feel, etc. Just total escalation of symptoms, panic before I even got behind the wheel, to say nothing of how I felt once I was out of the house.

After reading her books, I learned to stop what-if'ing every single detail of my life. This is just one small part of it, but her advice is not to map things out, not to say, "If only I could go this far away from home without panicking, I'll have accomplished something." Instead, you have to learn how to cope with yourself in the moment, not the situation you'll be in. And she gives some good advice on dealing with the symptoms of anxiety and panic.

I've often wondered if it wasn't Claire Weekes that Lucinda Bassett saw on the talk show, the morning that her struggle with anxiety turned around. (or, if it was a woman who either used Weeke's method to help others, or recovered by Weeke's method).

Hope this helps!

1. Hope and Help for Your Nerves -- by Claire Weekes;
2. Pass Through Panic: Freeing Yourself from Anxiety and Fear -- by Claire Weekes;

She was in this business long before Lucinda, whoi actually borrows from her work. I read the first one; it was pretty good.

Another author is Jon Kabat-Zinn. Just go on Amazon.com and type in their names and you can read reviews of the books.

WOW! I'm so surprised to see Claire Weeks' books being mentioned!

I've been dealing with anxiety/panic attacks for over 30 years now (hopefully after this program I won't have to any longer!). My best friends mother had panic attacks and anxiety and she (my girlfriend) knew exactly what I was talking about when I first told her what was happening to me. She immediately drove me to talk with her mother. Her mother happened to have a copy of one of Claire Weeks' books. I was amazed and releived to know that I wasn't the "only one" that had ever felt the feelings that I was feeling. Claire's books were my first lifesaver! That was 30 years ago! Glad to see that others are finding her books helpful Smiler

BTW, check out a book called The Anxiety Disease, by David V. Sheehan, M.D. This is a great book that will help you explain these "feelings" to your family and friends. You can find them on Amazon.com

I now have two of her books -

Hope and Help for your Nerves
More Hope and Help for your Nerves

I also have her audio cassette, "Pass Through Panic", which is basically Hope and Help on audio. But her voice is very soothing and warm to listen to.

I had "Peace from Nervous Suffering", but I stupidly borrowed it out and haven't seen it since. I will get it back someday.

This woman was way ahead of her time.
