Hi everyone,
I am trying to lose weight and am following a low carb diet. I'm eating alot of protein and vegetables, but I love fruit, especially strawberries and cantaloupe. I've stopped eating simple sugars and am feeling alot better. When we have anxiety, we should cut out sugar anyway, but what do you all think about fruit since it has natural sugars in it? Just want some input, because I feel a little confused....we've always heard that fruit is very good for us, but now with the no carb or lower carb eating plans, fruit isn't really a big part of the plan. Any suggestions? Thanks for listening! Dana |

I think strawberries have a very high glucose index, however, I think cantelope is lower.
I know how it is to figure out what to eat. Pineapple is the worse. This doesn't mean you can't eat them. However, and apple is the best overall. Go to www.Google.com and type in Glycemic Index and you should be able to find one that lists fruit accordingly. |

PAgirl,
I think sugars in fruits and veggies cant be that harmful. I mean we all need a certain amount of it in our bodies to survive and i think it would be better to get it from fruits and veggies rather than candy bars and soda. Although im not a dietician...lol Its just my little opinion. Good luck with finding info . Take care!Doyle |

My Dad has diabetes and he eats all fruits. He doesn't have to cut any kind out, he can just eat more of some than of others. But if you don't have diabetes, it just doesn't make sense to worry about stuff like that. I think fruit is good for you and you probably couldn't eat enough of it to make a big difference in your sugar intake. You'd probably have to eat ALOT!
P.S. I'm not a dietician either. lol [This message has been edited by Craw (edited 05-05-2002).] |

If you will listen to the tape regarding our diet you will see that all fruit is not created equally. Some have a higher amount of [natural] sugar than others and of course just because fruit is good for us doesn't mean eat unlimited amounts.
We are very sensitive people. Too much sugar, no matter what form it comes in will rev up our engines and if we don't work it off through exercise, even [too much] fruit can bring on anxiety. AND, just because something isn't good for us, like artificial sweeteners, doesn't mean they will make us feel bad. We need to use common sense and balance our lives. ------------------ Betsy Don't take anything personally. Always be impecable with your word. Don't assume anything. Always do your best! Thank you EastCobb, Zoe, Doyle, & Craw for your replies! You all made very good points. It's just I'm really watching my sugar intake and I know fruit is good for you, but I had read that it can be high in natural sugars. When you're trying to lose eating lots of sugar isn't good to do, so I'm going to do what Betsy said and look at the glucose index. Actually diabetes is very bad in my family and I'd like to try to prevent myself from getting that if at all possible. Thanks again for your replies!

I pretty much agree in some part with everyone who replied but I want to add this...You know your body. I am SO sensitive to sugar, even the sugar in fruits. I have an overeating problem (I am but no means "fat" although I think I am) and I find that when I eat fruits without protien I am super hungry! Even sometimes when I do eat it with protien I have a problem. Tonight I went out to dinner with my best friend and hubby. I had a shrimp cocktail and a great piece of grilled salmon as the entree. They wanted dessert so I opted for the fruit which turned out to be honeydew (YUM!!!). About an hour later I was FAMISHED!!!!! I know it sounds rediculous but its true. I proceded to eat nuts and raisins (oops forgot raisins had sugar) then had some sugar free hot chocolate (oops, here comes the caffiene) and now am chewing gum like a cow. BTW - its 11:30p.
So, all Im saying in know your body. I hear, from a fitness and weightloss point of view, to only eat fruits earlier in the day and not much after 2pm so you are eating them when you are more active. Ultimately, you know your body and what are your trigger foods. Good luck! Ali |
