The thought of exercise filled me with dread too. I had always wanted to try yoga, so I decided to do it for my exercise, and I have not regretted it since. For me, it helped me to relax and stretch not only my body, but my mind too. I have purchased three yoga DVDs and use these to work out once a day. I found that I enjoyed it, so it wasn't a chore for me. Find something that you might want to try or enjoy and expand on that.

Many people like walking. A half hour a day 3-5 days a week is good. I do my walking on the treadmill. I do need to be more 'religious' about it tho. Reena

malaya,
I would suggest forcing yourself to do something everyday. Even if you just walk for 10-15 minutes. Start out small and work yourself up.
I am a firm believer that even though you don't feel like exercising now, if you do it anyways....you'll begin to grow a passion for it.

You can get exercise in many different ways.
If you watch t.v., you can exercise during the commercials. Or park farther away than you would normally and walk briskly into work or wherever. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. That can help keep you fit.
I think the exercise that is best for someone who has anxiety problems or extra energy to expend would be a sustained exercise for a given amount of time...say 15 minutes or more. Having a buddy to do this with is the most helpful. When I swim on my own, I don't so as much as when I swim with my team.
There are many good ways to exercise....swimming (My fave), walking, jogging, lifting weights, yoga, water walking or water exercise class...and exercise videos are good too.
Good Luck!

Dear Malaya:

I think that the key to finding an exercise program that you like is to find something that you truly enjoy doing - it can be anything: walking, dancing in your living room while vacuuming, gardening, etc. because if you do something that you do not enjoy doing, you will find all kinds of reasons not to do it... Exercising should be fun - don't you agree?

After trying all kinds of things (my husband has a whole gym in our basement - threadmill, weights, roman bench, rowing machine, etc.) I discovered that what I liked the most was walking but since I suffer from agoraphobia, I can only do it in my basement! I try to walk for 20 minutes everyday - that's my goal. There are days when I walk for 1 hour on it without realizing it! I adjust the incline and the speed and there I go I put on some music and I do some little dance moves or I watch soap operas...

I also LOVE dancing (rock'n'roll, cha cha, etc.) so I often grab my 13 year old daughter and we dance together - I'm teaching her how to dance and it makes her laugh like crazy...

Another thing that I discovered recently is to do exercises with a really big balloon (have no idea what it's called). You can sit on it, and then roll down while keeping your balance - it gives you one heck of a workout - my husband uses it to tone his muscles and let me tell you it's fun and it works!

Hope this helps!
Sylvie
