Today was one of those days where I was eating way too much junk and then I stopped and said to myself, okay I need to do something.

I've been using the weight watchers program as a guide but sometimes its a pain to count points and just feel like something is controlling you. So I listened to lesson 5 to get another perspective again. Does anyone have any tips for changing your diet? I'm definitely going to start eating more foods with high protein and more fiber (like bran) But does this mean we have to know what our body weight/mass is? I know some personal trainers do that for their clients, is that what some of you do? Any guidance would be excellent.

I like the site http://www.calorie-count.com/ to track the calories you take in. If you become consicious of what calories you are taking in, you begin to choose. (Kind of like becoming aware of negative thoughts to choose positive thoughts instead). You can add a "eat meter" to your Internet tool bar too.

Is there a way to see how many calories you should take in each day?

i believe the average is around 2000. i know thats what i do. basically, i feel dieting is all a scam. if you are on a diet, all you think about is what CAN you eat, when CAN you eat next, what CAN'T you eat, how good all the stuff you CAN'T have is. too many do's and don'ts for me. my key is just buying good stuff. if your house is full of good stuff, theres no junk food to eat. i always keep apples and bananas handy, jar of pineapples, pretzels, turkey or chicken slices, etc. my theory is, just eat good and control your portions. that was huge for me. i would make allllll this stuff, and i would have to try everything. so, instead of making 1 lbs of pasta for me and my fiance, i'll make a half lb with a big salad. if i make steak, eat half the steak with a salad and plenty of broccoli. also, eat niiiice and slow. i'm a scarfer, i'll admit it. by the time i'm full, i've normally eaten WAY too much food. if you eat slow, your body will digest the food your eating and you will start feeling full before your on to plate number 3, lol. i'm not exactly sure of all the suggested grams of each category. i tried counting carbs, protein, calories, and fiber, but honestly, for me, it was more work than its worth. now when i'm shopping, i buy only good stuff, and i eat proper portions of what i do eat. i also snack on fruits and pretzels only. either way, i think if you TRY to diet, your thinking about it too much, and the last thing you wanna think about when trying to lose weight is food. i'm lost about 10 lbs in the past month which is great for me. excercise is also very important. i play tennis frequently. but no matter how well you eat, you will barely lose anything if you don't exercise.

I found that WW was the only thing that truly helped me...don't just use it as a guide...do it. Its hard for the first few weeks but once you start getting into it...point counting becomes 2nd nature....I got to know what everything was point wise w/o looking or got pretty accurate just by looking at the NI on the back...and the flex points helped me a lot. Just my 2 cents here...probably not what you are wanting to hear.

i track my calorie intake at www.thedailyplate.com and ddo cardio and weightlifting 3-4 times a week. i did the body age test at the Y to figure my BMI and i eat like 5 small meals a day-- that way im never REALLY hungry, and i can have more control of what i eat.. ive lost 28 pounds in the past 2 yrs and im in the best physical shape ive ever been in!! i used to be skinnier, yes, but not healthier-- and i turned 40 last summer, so the odds are against me anyway-- i just keep plugging away... theres hope for every body-- good luck!

yeah, WW is kinda, complicated IMHO. if you don't eat frozen WW food that says the points, your stuck goin through books tryin to find how many points certain things are. i think all these diets and programs and pills and all that are just money makers for them, and money losers for us. my theory, eat small portions, follow the food pyramid, stay under 2000 calories. water and juice only, and no fast food. real simple, real basic, easy to follow.

I was on this quaker rice cake website and it said something that if you want to lose weight, you should reduce your daily calorie intake by no more then 500 calories. to me that just seems impossible. I, however did go on that calorie counter and used the tool of how many calories you need for weight loss and that was a little over 1000 which seems so much more freeing to me. What do you you all do for the calorie intake to maintain a healthy weight or lose some extra pounds? Thanks for all the responses by the way Smiler

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
Frank Herbert

"How you climb up the mountain is just as important as how you get down the mountain. And, so it is with life, which for many of us becomes one big test followed by one big lesson. In the end, it all comes down to one word: grace. It's how you accept winning and losing, good luck and bad luck, darkness and the light."
