I know fruit is a much better snack than a bag of chips or a cookie, but fruit tends to have a lot of sugar. Is fruit really a good snack when you're trying to watch your sugar intake?
Thanks! |

Yes, fruits have sugar in them (fructose). However, fruits are very good for you. Fruits, depending on the exact fruit, are a good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. It is recommended that we eat 2-4 servings of fruits a day. Fruits & vegetables are believed to have protective effects against certain types of cancer. I would not cut them out of your diet.
Sugar in MODERATION is not bad for you. And if you look at the food guide pyramid, fruits are not at the top of the pyramid. Cakes, cookies, candy, etc. are at the top of the pyramid and should thus be eaten in moderation. Any diet that tells you to eliminate a certain food group is not good for your health, because it means you are missing the nutrients from that food group. Here are some links: http://www.eatright.org/Public/NutritionInformation/index_17536.cfm (Info on fruit) http://www.5aday.gov/ "The goal of the National 5 A Day for Better Health Program is to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables in the United States to 5 to 9 servings every day. In addition to this goal, the program seeks to inform Americans that eating fruits and vegetables can improve their health and reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and macular degeneration. Here is what WebMD Health says about preventing anxiety:
"Eliminate as much sugar from your diet as you can. Do not snack on candy, ice cream, or soft drinks. Substitute fruit when you feel like having something sweet." http://my.webmd.com/hw/anxiety_panic_disorders/tv7161.a...6-A91C-9531713CA348} |

Annie,
I would like to tell you what I do and some precautions that I take. My adrenal glands have been so whipped over the years from anxiety that when I get anxiouxs or just normal sometimes I get low blood sugar attacks. I am not sure if applies to you or not but when I eat fruit I eat the ones with the lowest amounts of sugar and glycemic index. Some of these include strawberry's, blue berries, and pears. You might try those that would give you the fruits you need plus not give you too much of a jolt of sugar. I have found that a combinaton low-carb, low-fat diet works best for me. I eat nothing white (most of the time) occassionally I eat a small baked potatoe. I eat whole grains, vegetables for my carbs. I do not eat alot of red meat, an occassional steak, but mostly chicken, fish, shrimp etc. You might try some of those ideas. Also blueberries are extremely good for you and have alot of anti-oxidants in them. Hope you can use some of my experiences. tchrist |
