Another small triumph to report...though I am excited about starting my new, part-time library job in my community, my husband has been unhappy with his career choices in the last couple of years. It is hard to watch him sort of slump through each day, declaring his day was either "bad" or "tolerable." Until just lately, he has been thinking that he would work this (a factory job) forever...he has this "all-or-nothing" type of thinking. He is a sports journalist by trade, and that is where he is happiest.
However, the small town we live in doesn't offer a whole lot of professional jobs. His former sports journalism job -- (he quit that to take a supposedly more prestigious job in a neraby town, hated it, and ended up unable to get his old job back)-- is tied up for now and the guy who took his spot is showing no signs of leaving, despite mediocre work and being at retirement age. Anyway, so here is the small triumph: My husband said to me that he would wait until 2009 to see if anything changes with respect to his old job and if nothing does, he would think about moving and finding work in a different community. I am glad he gave this date because it shows that his misery does not have to be infinite. Change comes really hard for him, so he is the type who might not change circumstances in his life even if it would benefit him...so the fact he gave himself until 2009 is a good sign, I think...it shows that he is thinking in a productive way.
So, we'll see what happens...in the meantime, I am determined to enjoy my new job as a librarian, and our first home together, which we've lived in for just over a year now.
