Another interesting topic for me regarding negative and positive self talk is figuring out what to say to yourself so that you can feel comforted & safe.
Very recently, my son was sick with ear infection & and then he got a virus on top of the ear infection, although at the time, we didn't know it was a virus. He had a fever for about 10 days straight and his Dr. didn't know what was causing the fever, especially since my son had no other symptoms after recovering from the ear infection. So it was extremely anxious time for me. I had great difficulty calming myself because I didn't know what was happening, so I couldn't come up with positive things to say. I would tell myself that he was okay and that he would recover from the fever and be fine. But I didn't really feel that way. I thought something was really wrong. So how do you calm yourself down, when you don't know what to say? Adele |

Hi Adele,
being a mother I went through all the ear infections, high fevers, croupe, and all the other goodies and it's one of the toughest things to go through having a child ill and not knowing why so I really think you did wonders under the circumstances. A positive thought is anything and everything realistic that makes you feel good. It's different for everyone in many cases. I look at nature and see beauty so for me that is a calming positive thought. I may think of a beach, or my kids, or grandkids faces, a sunset, music, it's just an endless list of feel good things, happy things, even the smell of a good dinner cooking or the smell of a CAKE!!!!LOL, Can't eat them anymore, but boy did they smell and taste good. I hope I was even a little helpfull. It will just all become a natural way to think..with some time. Be Patient and kind to yourself every day. BELIEVE YOU CAN CONQUER ANYTHING~ AND YOU WILL !! I DID IT, YES !!!!! |

Yes, reading your post was very helpful for me. I was very happy to hear that you thought I did well considering the circumstances. Just that statement alone made such a difference to me. So many times when we are in the thick of things, we can't see the forest for the trees. I can see now that I did do a good job advocating for my son and taking care of myself as well. This gives me tremendous hope that I can keep going and tackle the next cold whenever it does happen. Of course I'm not going to worry about something that hasn't happened.
In the future, I will try to remember to think of things that make me really happy and then keep the positive thought replacement coming. I noticed today, that I had a negative thought and I could hear myself saying automatically, "That is a negative thought and I don't have to think that way anymore. I know I'm okay, etc." and continuing on with the positive thought replacement. I didn't even have to think about stopping the thought, I just did it automatically. So that was very encouraging for me as well. Certainly steps in the right direction! |

Hi Adele, It sure sounds as though things are really falling into place and it will only keep getting better so keep working hard and soon you will be amazed at how far you've come and see the light at the end of the journey getting closer and closer.
