Looking for support on my new habit, shortness of breath. I went through the program about 6 years ago. Love the program, did well, still review sessions from time to time. However, ever since I started selling new home construction on 100% commission about 2.5 years ago, I started this semi-hyperventilation thing every day. I've gotten sort of used to it, but it is very draining, and I really want it to stop. I just recently quit this job, and I did do well at it. I sold $7.4Million worth of new homes in 18th months. which took a lot out of me, since it's such a demanding job. Anyway, my last day is this Thursday and I'm really praying that I can leave this holding my breath habit behind. I know it may take some time since it's a habit now, but...has anyone ever experienced this? and, what have you found that helps? Do you think it can be related to too much job stress?
Thanks for your thoughts,

Amber

hi amber,
feeling short of breath and hyper-ventalating are just symptoms of stress and anxiety. and yes, it becomes a habit, as most uncomfortable feelings do. i've found a lot of help with the 'breathing box', a kit by Dr. Gay Hendricks. the kit comes with a CD and a DVD and a study guide. essentially, it teaches you how to breathe correctly, and shows how something as simple as changing your posture can affect your airflow. you can get it on amazon.com for about $17.
hope this suggestion helps!
ps. congratulations on working so hard! and on taking time off! Smiler

Its definitly anxiety. The job stress probably brought it on, now its probably a habit. I think it will go away all by itself when your stress level goes down. Are you on any meds. ?
They help. Let us know how your doing.

Amber,

I can relate to this. This is the worse symptom of anxiety that I experience. I hate it. Most of the time I feel starved for air. At times it feels like I will stop breathing altogether. Lately I have really had it bad. You are absolutely right, it is so draining. And yes, I believe it is related to stress and it becomes somewhat of a habit. I have to force myself to breathe from my abdomen. But that makes me nervous paying so much attention to my breathing.

I will definately have to look into the "breathing box" kit that cole mentioned.

Take care,
Tina

Thank you all for your responses. That means so much to me to know that I am not alone. I'll work hard to under react to this shortness of breath thing, and I'll follow up to share my success at reducing stress. Take care, and God Bless you on your journeys.
