I'm curious if anyone has tried mindfulness meditation practice to reduce stress, anxiety and/or depression. A number of medical schools around the country have started stress reduction clinics which teach this approach.
I used the Midwest Program for a number of years and it was very helpful. However, I got to a point where my mind was just not responding to the positive dialogue and thought replacement. I have found the meditation to be very helpful in this regard. Anyone else ever try? Jim |

I have purchased several CD's from amazon.com. I love them. There are some that the voices are so soothing, calming, one cannot help but focus on the narrarator. It is very quite, very grounding. It has helped me quite my mind and relax me so very much that I do not make it through the entire cd, I fall asleep! I got several for family, they just love them! There are also one's that are subliminal, give positive thoughts and do calm as well. I will try almost anything to calm my overworked, type A personality head! Warm wishes, LizB

Sorry Keeping the Faith,
I did not set the post on follow up, so I did not see your question until I went through posts. These are the ones I really enjoy... Guided Meditations: For Developing Calmness, Awareness, and Love by Bodhipaksa. Guided Meditations for Stress Reduction by Bodhipaksa. Indigo Dreams: Adult Relaxation-Guided Meditation/Relaxation Techniques decrease anxiety, stress, anger by Lori Lite. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Take care! Hey There!
this message is kinda late but i would like to add that mindfulness meditation has been very helpful for me and im sure that it is one of the better ways to handle anxiety throughout life! I have learned a lot about meditation in that it takes patience and plenty of practice throughout ones life. it compuonds on itself and can be frustrating. I have practiced for about a year, twice a day for about 40 minutes each sitting. Though one major aspect of mindfulness practice is not to get anywhere but where you are already, I have to say in all honesty, Im seeing micro steps toward becoming more of an observer with my thoughts and am able to sit (or work) through the rough days. In time I hope to cultivate more of an ability to look at my emotions from a place of freedom, but again, even that wish goes against the practice. some books you must read, Jon Kabat Zinn's, Full catastrophe living, goes way into the body sensations of panic and anxiety, and another book, brantley is the author but its called, "calming your anxious mind." these are great books, and offer a great view, medically and mindfully of the ever present stress ronsponse thats in all of us. best to all of you! |

Sierra,
Thanks for your post. I have the Brantley book and really like it - it's been very helpful. "Full Catastrophe.." is on my list next. I just finished "Wherever You Go, There You Are", and thought it was great. I used it as a daily reader for about 2 months. I have been formally meditating for about 8 months (mostly once a day). It has helped me to see more of what's really going on with my thinking, especially the subtleties that I never noticed. Recently I have been doing the Lovingkindness meditation, which has revealed my ingrained assumptions about other people and things in general. I've never been much of an "in the moment" guy, but I never realized the extent of it until I started meditating. Now I know. Jim |
