Just wondered if anyone else homeschooled. How old are your kids and what have you learned about managing it all?

I do. I have learned to go with the flow. Kids are unique and learn differently and at different times. The rules don't apply. A little structure for me is good but not too much. All families are unique as well. Find what works for you and your family.

Yes, I taught my daughter thru home schooling in 6th grade briefly. But she was so fast in learning that she got ahead of me and finished way before the time to complete the course. It was the choice of my daughters. So, I put her and her older sister in an independant home study program whereby they signed a contract with the city schools. The girls taught themselves at home by means of all the materials from the city schools. My daughters where very fast learners. They did not skip any grades and completed all the books and requirements from the city schools.
My youngest daughter, on her own completed 7th grade in 4 weeks, 8th in in 8 weeeks and so forth. She graduated from High School (independant Home study) when she was 13 years old with scholarships. The other daughter graduated at 16 with approx $5,000 scholarships. The 13 year old attended college and recieved an AA degree in Business and a certificate in Business administration. Graduated from College at 13 and was in the newspaper as the youngest to graduate. She was a writer on the school newspaper and on the Deans's list. Landed a job at 16 prior to graduating from college, manages an office and does their sales also. The other daughter completed computer training and landed a job working for several plants as an newwork administratior and tech. From there took a job working on computers for several law libraries. The child has to be motivated and then they will do well. But if not they can lag behind as I know has happened with a couple. One draw back is that they grow up a little faster than you might want. They are still young but academically/ and secularly they are in an adult world and think like adults and beyound. Fortuantely, I am proud of my daughters and they are smart girls with a set of values and just nice people. Hope I helped answer your question. Wish you the best. WOW *VICTORIA* I am impressed with your daughters. I bet you are a very proud parent because I would be. Congradulate them for me. I've been thinking a lil bit about home schooling here lately. My main reason for not doing it is becasue if there is an area in a subject that he has problems with...what if i cant help him? My son is just now starting pre school....just been giving it some thought. Where as if he went to a public school there are teachers that have knowledge in each subject.Subject materials are getting so much harder. By the time my kids are in 5th 6th grade it is going to be sooo hard. *VICTORIA* what did you do whne they needed help? Did you always know the answers?

I homeschool my children as well. I have 6 kids, ages 1 to 16. I've homeschooled for 10 years so far. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
There are a LOT of resources for homeschooling children, even children with special needs. The most common remark made by mothers thinking about homeschooling is "I couldn't do that, I'm not smart enough." But you can! Statistics are so high with homeschoolers that were even taught by mothers who didn't graduate from high school. I've relearned and learned right along with them on subjects. Curriculum in the U.S. public schools is actually so much easier than ever! Curriculum has been what is called "dumbed down" and no, I didn't make up that term! There are plenty of conferences in the states to also help you understand homeschooling. If you want any help finding resources, I will surely help you. I hope I'm not blowing you away with too much information, I'm just very passionate on homeschooling. Now, ask me about negative self talk and I'll be quiet! God Bless, Heather |
