Hi there!
I am asking this because I am about ready to move. The problem? I don't know where I want to live! When I got married I moved where my husbands first job was. On the other side of our state. 200 miles from our families. That was okay though and we have chosen to keep the distance. We aren't a close knit family. We come from alot of 'nuts' and we love them, but we don't want to be around them. On the other hand I get so lonely! Alot of you know my husband is disabled so it's all up to me!I almost went out and applied for a job just to stay in this area (my comfort zone) but, it's really not where I want to stay. Help! Thanks! rhythm |

Diane,
I live where I live because, like you, I don't have a close knit family anymore. I live w/ my parents still...the people who love me the most. I also live about 3 hours from my brother. I moved 1000 miles away from I grew up to be close to these people. I like the area for the most part, just wish there were a few more things to do around here. I also get lonely a lot b/c I don't have anyone I can call a friend here. I don't know where I would like to be right now...but since I am near the people who love me the most, it will be alright! Just thought I would share. Cindy Loo |

Hey Cindy Loo!
I admire you for hanging in there! You are still young tho- who knows what lies ahead for you! ( I know everyone loves me/us) They all want us back too! I can sure relate to not having a good friend. My closest is 100 miles away! We used to be neighbors. Those were the days! Atleast we have our 'cyber-friends'! Good to hear from you! Hi Smears! My 2 sons have left the nest as of 2 years ago. We always got together w/ our relatives on the holidays, but that was all. So, you lived in Washington? Where abouts? I am in the foothills of Mt. Rainier. No, I have never had a boring day as I have had to work since my husband's disability. I just recently quit my job last month due to, well, that's on another topic! I do agree that I would like to live somewhere that has more convenience since I have to drive 30 miles to the closest mall. That's important!lol! Then again I grew up in the city and now love the beautiful nature I am surrounded with. Pro's and con's! Thanks for sharing! rhythm [This message has been edited by rhythm (edited 03-28-2002).] |

I live where I live because thats where me and my hubby both grew up. Both our families are here and I guess we never looked to move. My hubby owns his own business so it would be difficult to move. Plus, I love the beauty. You know what I mean! Just move in closer. There's lots to do around here.

rhythm,
We lived on McChord AFB. On one side of us was Lakewood and on the other side of us was Spanaway. We took trips to Mt. Rainier all the time! I have some fabulous pictures we took. I love all those tall cedars!! The smell is heavenly. I am an outdoor freak that's for sure. |

I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, FL. I also have lived where my husband's company transfered us to: Richmond, VA, Jacksonville, FL and Atlanta, GA.
I look at it as an adventure I have been blessed with. In every town I learn new things about different people in different areas of the country and every move has given me the opportunity to make new friends. It is especially neat that when I meet someone new they don't put me in my little personality box that a family does. I have really noticed since doing the program and getting better that my relatives still talk to me as if I am "stressed out" and "overly sensitive" even when I am not. They are so used to putting me in those boxes they still behave as if I am. I find it rather interesting and amusing, and a bit sad, too. ------------------ Don't take anything personally. Wilmington North Carolina is a wonderful place! I grew up here and I think I'm very lucky to have done so. We have beautiful beaches, a lovely historic downtown right on the riverfront, and a lot of beautiful historical landmarks, buildings and churches. It's a small town, but not so small that everyone knows your business and there's always plenty to do. We have a great college, alot of new money starting businesses in our area, and a solid movie industry (this is where Dawson's Creek is filmed and we have had dozens of big movies filmed here). It's also where Michael Jordan, David Brinkley, and Charlie Daniels grew up. I hate to go on and on, but I really love my home town. It's full of nice people and alot of southern charm. If you guys ever get a chance to visit North Carolina you should try to get down to Wilmington. It's a beautiful place.

I live on Long Island New York. We (hubby and me) live here because we both grew up on LI. My parents are still here and probably will be forever. His family has all moved to new jersey. Yes, it is cheaper but if you are a NY'er and move to NJ its almost like being a traitor!!!! I cant bring myself to do it!! lol
Ok, on the serious side, my husband works in Manhattan so it is a great train ride for him. We actually did look in NJ for awhile for a house but for those of you who have heard my story before...I have a back injury so we had to stop our house search. I have been doing the program while going through horrific pain and thank g_d for that!! It has saved me from a lot of panic. I am on lesson 12 and have learned so much about myself. I LOVE living on Long Island. I dont know why. It is crowded, it is packed with snobby people, bad drivers and lots of traffic all times of the day BUT it is HOME to me. I love it here. Also, I am EXTREMELY close with my parents. SO, although we thought of moving to NJ becuase we could get a bigger house and more land I realized my happiness was worth 10 times the amount of land I could ever get. I urge all of you to really search your soul for the answers on this issue. Moving is not so easy to reverse. Stretch beyond your comfort zone and be true to yourself but dont stretch too far to try and prove a point to yourself! I hope this makes sense. Good luck you guys! Ali |

Does the weather affect you. i live in the beautiful but rainy northwest and it's really hard for a lot of people to take the endless gray days in the winter. I know someone who's trying to move to New Mexice because of the sunshine. just some thing to think about. Ask yourself "what would I do if there was no fear involved?" Maybe that's your dream. I do love that we live near my kids grandparent, since I didn't get to know mine much growing up.

Hi rhythm! I live in San Antonio partly as a compromise. I really enjoy cooler weather but my family is in Houston and will not move. After my father had quadruple by-pass surgery, I decided to move closer. San Antonio was close enough to Houston without having to be IN Houston!! I also lived here during the early 80s while I was an undergraduate. I like the city. If I had my druthers, though, I think I would head for the mountains (hence the username "Mountaingirl")
Grateful -- the San Antonio summer isn't all that bad! Everything is air-conditioned so unless you are outside and its 110 degrees, the heat doesn't bother you too much. The city offers all of the amenities of a large city but has a real small-town feel to it. The people here have a real affection for their history so they have refused to build some ultra-modern downtown area. Small neighborhoods abound and often have a charm all their own. If you have any questions about San Antonio, please feel free to send me an e-mail and I'll try to answer them. ------------------ Mountaingirl come forth into the light of things ~ let nature be your teacher. Hi Reena!
Sounds like you are have got your 'roots' firmly planted! I like that! Especially if you can get along w/ your families and you are happy there. Seems like it would make alot of things less complicated. I am not sure about moving in closer-Hmmmm- I just don't know yet... Hi Smears! Good ole' McChord! We could have met for lunch! High five to another 'outdoor freak' !Hi Bakedpears! Is it up to YOU to make the decision too? Just kidding, this is exciting!Hi Betsy! You have had an adventurous life! So true about the 'personality box'. It's too bad that your relatives can't accept the calm and confident Betsy, but that's their problem, right? !Hi Nikki! Wilmington sounds very nice! I would love to visit there sometime! Thanks !Hi Ali! A New Yorker eh? I have to tell you a story about when I was working up at Mt.Rainier. This couple was there visiting from NY and were the rudest people I have ever encounterd!lol! NO offense, but they thought they were the only ones, that were there, at the moment, and made it loud and clear, that they did not know what to do about the slugs we have!!! I said," What do you want to do to it?" ( You know we sell slugs for souvenirs here in the PNW) He said, "I want to kill it!" (They are all over the place) I said," How do you plan on doing that?" He said," I will just step on it!" I said," go ahead, but good luck getting it off of your shoe!" It REALLY bothered him! Although he decided to leave it alone and not have to deal w/ scraping the thing off. Evidently you don't have slugs there! Ha!-- Okay, you have made some very good pts. First of all, I hope you are feeling better! That is great that you are almost done w/ the program! This IS really a soul search for me/us. My husband doesn't care. It's so much up to me as I still need to continue to work. AND good old FEAR is playing a big part of my decision. I know I need to stretch beyond my comfort zone, but not to the extent to prove something. That was an execellent point and made total sense! A good one for a vacation maybe? I want to be fairly close to our 2 sons that we have excellent relationships with. Also keeping in mind that they will marry and hopefully give us a few grandchildren...I'm happy 'LI' is home for you. I would like to visit! Thanks for the input ! Hi Mintflower! Where do you live? You are right about the endless gray days here. A bit depressing for sure. New Mexico sounds very nice...If there were no fear involved I definetly would be somewhere w/ a warmer climate. Nice to hear from you !Hi Grateful! I grew up in the city and know exactly what you mean about little 'cities' inside of the big one...Ours was broken up to the north-end, south-end, west-side and east-side. And they really were, each a town in itself. It was probably a circumference of 30 miles. I am so glad you brought that up b/c I have lived in small towns for 25 years now and had forgotten that usually a big city is like that! That is a good idea about making a list. It really sounds like it's no big deal until you get right down to it! Thanks and good-luck with your move !Hi mountaingirl! YOU know you have your 'druthers!'Ha! You also know that (and all of you reading this now) that my nickname is 'mountaingoat'. I wake up and see that mountain every day. Changing every minute. It's sacred to me. Sounds like you have made a great compromise! Hope you are all settled in your very own home! Good to hear from you :-)! Sorry, about your smiley face. My limit is up!:-( Well, now I have lots to ponder... I feel so blessed that I DO have a choice and in time I will make it. You all have been a great help! Many thanks! rhythm :-) |

Zoe did you ever think of Destin, FL?
It has dense woods (very countrylike), many outlet shopping centers along with fun stuff for the kids and the beautiful shore of the Gulf Coast (Gulf of Mexico beaches are the BEST)....not to mention dolphins and beautiful sunsets. Destin is a popular place. Places Like Fort Walton Beach is less expensive and only next door to Destin. I lived there for 2 1/2 years and loved it. They have many trees!! Just my 2 cents! SMears, thanks for the link, just looking at the picture on their web page makes me want to move!
What a wonderful beach! The only down side is that it is about as far away as one can get from where I am now on the west coast! But, it sounds like you have done some major moves across country in your day. Thanks again for the info I will enjoy exploring that web site. Zoe |
