Hi...I am currently on both Buspar and clonapen for anxiety and post traumatic stress disdorder. I have been told that I will always have to deal with anxiety issues because I no longer have a thyroid and that it is a common problem for thyroid cancer survivors to have to deal with. Is there anyone else out here like me who now deals with anxiety related to a medical condition caused by missing hormones?

Before becoming hormonally challenged (weak grin)I would sometimes suffer from anxiety, but it was rare and easily handled. Now I cannot do it without medication. I also live with the threat of possible carcinoid tumor which occasionally affects my adrenal glands and sends me into major anxiety....sky high blood pressure, muscle weakness and cramping, cold flushing etc. Anything that feels like this is happening to me makes me panic. Thus the PTSD response. Thank goodness that doesn't happen often!

And I'd appreciate readers responses on the merits of Buspar and Clonapen and the pitfalls. Thanks,
Lorrie

Oh yeah...I forgot to add to my original post that I feel very frustrated since this all hit me. I used to view new situations with excitment rather than anxiety. But new situations often make me fearful, now. Instead of seeing them as exciting, I want to run. Life used to be my adventure, and it still is to some degree, but now it's also a fearful place to be. And I'm struggling to deal with that switch.

Hi Tney I wanted to say I have had a thyroid ectomy, they removed the right side of my thyroid and ever since the surgery I have had anxiety. They say my thyroid is functioning fine, but I still think it's due to the surgery or a big coincidence. I never had a up or down tyroid I just had a nodule. It was noncncerous thank god. I am not on any meds. I have had anxiety for 4 years now I think I might have ocd to. Well good luck!!!! Big Grin Big Grin

Thanks for sharing Kurstin, i appreciate it.
I have talked with many hypo/hyper thyroid patients (I'm now classed as permanently hypo) who suffer from anxiety as well as many women who begin battling anxiety after losing their ovaries...either thru menopause or from oopherectomy/hysterectomy. I've had both. Fore sure it's chemically related.

I'd encourage you to try to find a thyroid physician off the about.com thyroid site (Top Thyroid doctors) You might be able to get some help with this. Someone who's willing to tweak thyroid hormone for you until you feel better.
