My daughter starting have Panic Attacks about 6 months ago, and it really stopped her life, she was put on Paxil CR 37.5mg and I cant tell you how much this has helped her, she is back in school and she is doing better then ever, she was always very shy and found socializing very difficult she has done such a 90 degree turn , I just want people to know that it took good 6 to 8 weeks for her to really feel much better she started off on the 12.5 mg and then went to the 25 mg and we found the 37.5mg just right for her. There were some side effects and the first few weeks she still was having panic attacks but once the medication was really in her system and we found the right mg for her to take, it really did help,My daughter has a chemical inbalance that causes this and there is nothing wrong with taking medication to help you, Beleive me until we got to the doctor for about 4 weeks did my daughter suffer and even the first 5 weeks on Paxil with the side effects she suffered but now she is doing so good and I cant tell you how happy she is with herself,,,, So having to take medication is not such a bad thing,,,, Angie

my daughter was put on Paxil cr and started with 12.5, but then she got stomach pain, diarrhea, and insomnia which just added to her anxiety and then she went from going to school some to none at all. She went off the Paxil after 3 weeks. Then he waited a little while until her symptoms were better, and then tried Zoloft, but after the first pill, she had those symptoms again. And before those two was Lexapro which did the same thing. The Xanax she takes for going out to the store, etc. does give her side effects. We don't know what to do next. Now, we are both suspicious of the meds.

hopeandpray,
It will help if your daughter is receiving therapy for her anxiety problems. Learning cognitive-behavioral therapy is the MOST beneficial, worthwhile thing she could possibly do in her life! Medications are not for everyone. What works for one person, may not work for the other. Medications, if they work, are good as a start-up plan while therapy takes place. Medications like this should NEVER be taken unless the user is involved in some sort of therapy for their anxiety. Otherwise, dependence on meds is what happens and the user never really learns to change bad habits to good habits in thinking and behavior. There are many things your daughter can do to overcome her anxiety. She must be willing to learn about the anxiety/depression and where it's coming from and how to change it. It's the bad self-talk along with other factors that caused this chemical imbalance in the first place. It has been scientifically PROVEN that even the ACT of smiling ( even when we FEEL terrible) changes the chemicals in the brain and if the right behaviors along with the proper self-talk is done, over time, your daughter will rebalance the chemicals in the brain. I strongly encourage that you educate your daughter and get her involved in learning new skills either through a program or group therapy. There are also free cognitive-behavioral group meetings through a free program called "Recovery Inc." You can visit their website by clicking this link. You have a good chance there are meetings in the area in which you live. http://www.recovery-inc.org Take Care and God bless! |

Dear Hope.......I second what sunset says however, meds along with CBT is a great combo to have I think. Remember.......all those problems your daughter was having is normal in the beginning. That is the body adjusting to them. You have to stick through it and let that time pass to really know if it's working. I took Paxil and in the beginning was nauseous, dizzy, had insomnia, than drowsy you name it. thought it was making me worse but I hung in there and than those went away and I felt great. I went off for a few years. Than did this program which helped tons! But, decided to go back on meds so now with this program , I feel good about the combo.
If your daughter doesn't get better with CBT or isn't willing right now, I'd suggest you give the meds a chance to work. good luck |

For the first few weeks I would say about 5 my daughter did have side effects from the Paxil, there were times I was saying to her, lets get you off this medication, its not right for you she was still having panic attacks and I didnt see really any change, To be honest I dont know why she stayed with it but she did, and around the 7th to 8th week, she was feeling really so much better and she was going out with her friends, were whenhe was in the cycle of Panic she would not leave my side, and felt safe only aroun me

Thanks everyone for responding. She was having CBT until she got agoraphobia, now she can't make it to the office anymore. We are doing Lucinda's program and waiting for it to work. She would have stayed on the SRRI's longer, but she was having severe side effects, enough to not function at all. That is our dilemma. She needs the meds and the therapy, but can't take the meds and can't get to the therapy. Has anyone tried Clarocet http://www.clarocet-nri.com/index.html that states no side effects, non-prescription?

Hope, I've never heard of Clarocet but I'm sure I would have taken it had I known because I tried all that natural stuff. It may help. What I took just wasn't enough. Please let us know how it works out, I'm sure we'd all like to know about it. (and if it doesn't, there are other meds , a right combo is out there, you just gotta keep trying)
best of luck |

Hi Angie,
I have been taking Paxil for about 2yrs now. It has, along with the program, literally given me my life back in so many ways. I am so happy that it is helping your daughter. My 12 yr old daughter is starting to show the dreaded signs of anxiety disorder. My heart just breaks for her. I have been doing my very best trying to work with her with the program. If medication becomes necessary then I will certainly not think twice about it. Life is too short. I am so very thankful that there is help for us when we need it. God bless! |

i'm a new member and i'm not sure i'm doing this right. i am trying to post something new but i think it may look like i'm responding to someone's message. anyway, i just want any input on zoloft which i started taking a week ago at 12.5 mg. i am having side effects like weakness, some dizziness and increased anxiety but my doctor said to hang in there because it will all go away as soon as my body starts adjusting to the med. i am terrified of taking medication as many of us are, i suppose. but it has come to a point that i have to force myself to eat just so i don't lose anymore weight resulting from my anxiety and depression. i am starting with the program and the tapes help. i am also going to a program similar to MWC called Phobease offered by Kaiser Permanente which is very helpful and eye-opening. if anybody out there is takinf zoloft, please reply about your experience and how it helped you. maybe alleviate some of my worries about taking meds. thanks and godbless. jes

For you dosage amounts and determining which med is best for you, did you see a Primary care physician or a physiciatrist?

i have suffered from anxiety and panic for about 4 years now (all my life really, just didn't know it), i tried xanax, and although it did help with the anxiety, it made me feel lazy and tired. this is only a suggestion as it has turned my life around completley, i go to a chinese medication doctor/naturopath, he did a thorough examination, and prescribed herbal remedies combined (mostly taken as a tea), it has made a tremendous difference with no side effects: just some food for thought koko |
