I did a similar post in another spot and somebody was very helpful. My constant worry/obsessive thought that I CAN NOT get out of my head is the fact that I had LASIK back in Nov. 2006 and even though my eyes healed fine and I see 20/20 I am afraid I am going to go blind someday! This thought is constantly in my head but has only started to bother me in the past 3 weeks. I also have other scary thoughts that creep into my head about bad things heppening to my family, I have a 5 year old son so I constantly worry about him, he is my pride and joy.

4202 - You need to start practicing observation. You are identifying with your thoughts - as if they were real. They are mechanical in nature and the more you react to them the more those thoughts will bug you. Practice underreacting. Observe them instead of talking back to them. Notice how scared you feel by not talking back to them. Just notice. Don't judge. Don't try to make them go away. When you stop fighting them they will go away. Every time they come back do the same thing. They'll lose their power eventually.
Learn to live with the understanding that there are no guarentees in life. It's that simple. Remind yourself of this. Don't take it any further than that, tho. Just a simple statement. Continue observing your thoughts. Get fascinated by them instead of scared of them. Ego loves it when we react and overreact. It keeps all those thoughts alive and coming back. When you start to work on yourself in this way the ego gets louder and louder but only for a short time. You are actually diffusing it. Be patient. It is a process. Soothe yourself through this. How would you talk to a small child? That's how you talk to yourself. It's OK to feel anxious. You are scaring yourself. No wonder you feel afraid. Lots of people have Lasiks (sp) surgery and they never have a problem. Stop scaring yourself. Lighten up and laugh at the ridiculousness of your thoughts. "Life is not about comfort. It is about living." Dr. Howard Liebgold |
