I could see were this might help for certain obsessive thoughts. For me, I have one paticular thought I think writing over and over again would just impress it in my mind as a fact. I think rather than get bored with it, (only tired of writing it) I would start believing it could happen and therefore it is true.

I am not critical of the suggestion as obviously it works or it would not be suggested. However, do any of you have a thought on this subject?

Thank you.

Hi Victoria, I will try shed some light on what you are saying.By writing down your scary thought I would think that I would find that I would start to see that this thought is probably irrational and that I probaly would never do what I am writing. With anxiety it seems that we have an irrational thought pattern at times and it can get the best of us if we let it.However if this doesn't work for you do something else but always try to replace that scary thought with something true and positive and dwell on those things. Hope this helps, Been There

Thanks for takinging the time to share your wisdom.

Unfortunately, my scary thought is coming true. So, I am glad I did not keep writing it over and over again with the pos. That would have made it harder to accept. What I am writing out is that even what I may consider the worst thing can always have a positive side. I am now learning to make a change in my thinking (lesson 12).

However, with certain obsessive scary thoughts in a certain catagory as described in the tape/lesson I would agree that writing it out would work in that it would help me see that they are unlikely to happen.

Thank you again for sharing. I wish you the best in your progress.
Sincerely,

Dear Victoria,

Reid Wilson, in his book, STOP OBSESSING, recommends this desensitization method for those thoughts that are unrealistic, unreasonable or irrational.

External anxiety - real concerns... need to be met with the truth and comfort. I'm sure that's what you mean when you say you are finding a different way to think about your concerns.

Our thoughts are with you, Carolyn

Dear Carolyn,
Yes, I mean anxiety over a real concern.
I posted today a question about being terrified of eating because of pain -- in the beginning of the forum. My daughter is so ill that the pain and anxiety is affecting negatively important areas of her life. Unfortunately, because of this she would not be able to handle this wonderful study course, tapes or other. Fortunately, I use the skills from it to be more supportive and understanding.

My obsessive scary thoughts are about things that could happen to her and some slowly are.
I understand they are not the type of thoughts that are discussed in the tape on the subject. My wonderful husband tries to comfort me and help me with the truth on the situation. However, when I sometimes see her and talk to her I start (inwardly) getting panicky and obsessing with worry. When it gets bad I have trouble doing the relaxation tape or thelesson I'm on. However, I am still on schedule. I think because I am also the caregiver of an elderly parent I am surrounded by illness. And then and having to work it is difficult. Looking forward to starting
lesson 13.

Thank you again for your reply to this posted topic. The problem I am working on now is accepting without being analytical, the situation.

Sincerely,
Victoria
