General Doctrines of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
1) All of your emotions, affect or feelings (also referred to as moods) are created by "cognitions" or thoughts. A cognition refers to the way you look at things- your perceptions, mental attitudes, beliefs or thoughts. You feel the way you do right now because of the thoughts you are thinking at this moment. 2) When you are feeling depressed, anxious, ect..,your thoughts are dominated by a pervasive negativity or irrationality. You come to believe things really are as bad as you imagine them to be. 3) The negative or irrationl thoughts which cause you emotional turmoil nearly always contain gross distortions (cognitive distortions or automatic thoughts). These thoughts are not only irrational but just plain wrong, and that distorted or twisted thinking is the exclusive cause of nearly all your suffering. Te result: Irrational, distorted thinking andnon-productive behavior leads to dysfunctional relationships. Hey Chris, my therapist gave me this. This is the general doctrine of Cog. Beh. Therapy and is what this program is based on. God Bless. |
