I have never been on medication for depression. I've seen several therapists and for now i'm taking st. john's wart. It's helping (a little). However, i think i have known for some time now that i need medication. I am almost done with the program and although i am progressing, i just feel like this is too powerful for me. Depression really sucks ass. Who exactly do i go to for the medication? My general practitioner\family doctor? Or do i have to see a therapist again and have them prescribe it for me? If anyone has some advice, i'd appreciate it. Thanks, Maddy :I

If your therapist is an M.D., ask your therapist. If not, you need to ask your primary care physician/family doctor.

I had a therapist. And I talked it over with her. Then I went to my primary care physician and there was no problem getting a prescription.

I'm also taking St. John's wort. I used to take 3 tablets spread out during the day and didn't find it was helping much either.

Because I figured out that the evening time is when I'm most prone to attacks, I now take my pills then. Again, I try to spread them out as much as I can during the evening. I'm not sure if this approach is correct but so far I find that it is working much better.

I've heard also that different strands/ brands of St. John's wort may work better. So far though I haven't changed brands yet.

I also agree with Helen on this one.

My psychiatrist is the one who has prescribed my medications. She is trained for just that....medicine for psychological problems. I'd rather go to someone who specializes in this sort of thing (a psychiatrist) and works with it every day than to get my medicine from a regular MD, but thats just my personal preference.
