Can anyone help me? I definitely feel like my anxiety is getting better because I have gone three days now (thanks be to God) where I haven't had to take an anxiety pill (clorazapem to be exact). I usually take these before stressful situations or if I'm having a panic attack. My question is that when I go to fly I get really anxious before the plane takes off. The anticipation of taking off and going into the air. I find when the engine starts I get more and more nervous and when the plane is going down the runway I have an anxiety attack usually. Once I'm in the air I'm fine, but the take off is scary for me. I have a flight coming up Jan. 6, should I take a pill before hand? I can handle almost everything now, but not flying.

I personally would take a pill before hand if you know your positive self talk and all that fun stuff doesn't work when flyinf. Flying isn't an uncommon thing to be nervous about - I have a flight coming up in a month as well and i'm a little scared! lol! so I will probably be taking something beforehand just to keep me calm and make it through the flight without freaking out! lol! I'm really working on becoming better but if I should need them, I will have them!

I think you are right. I get myself so anxious my heart is pounding and I get that sick butter fly feeling in my stomach and it isn't comfortable. When I take the pill I can relax more and these symptoms go away, maybe when I'm more into the program I can stop taking them completely, but at least I'm doing better.

Anxiety Resources

Let's not make more of the situation then what it is. Remember it is normal to have anxious feelings in situations that are not common to you. I believe I read that something like 95% of those who fly have a heightened sense of anxiety/stress on take off or landing of the airplane. I feel this comes from 'history'. Planes that have had trouble usually do in the these two phases. I would try to bring some sort of music device iPod etc etc that you can listen to during these phases of flying. Of course, take your med's if need be but try to overcome the anxiety without it first, knowing that the guy next to you is also anxious, but he's not showing you.
