Some of you have already gone through this and know that it passes quickly. If you have/had extra anxiety (just what we need right Smiler) the first couple of days/weeks of your participation in the program, please continue reading.

We have found this to be the case for perhaps a third of the beginners. Many ask the question, "Am I getting worse? Should I continue?" Let's look at why this may be happening and I believe you will find reassurance in understanding.

First, we must remember we are dealing with our anxiety, and any time we deal with something we have not been looking at but shoving under the rug and distracting ourselves from-in order not to Feel, it's normal for us to feel More uncomfortable. You are Focusing on your anxiety. You are not trying to run from it-turn around-look, hide from it-stand up-look, or distract yourself from it. You are staring it in the face. Running, hiding, and distracting are behaviors/coping techniques you've used in the past. As you now know-they will never "fix" the problem. Looking straight at your anxiety can bring on some anxiety at first but remember, this type of anxiety is TEMPORARY.

WE CAN'T GIVE AWAY ANYTHING WE DON'T OWN-try that with your neighbor's car. Smiler Own your anxiety so you can give it away once and for all.

One of my favorite comedians, Louie Anderson, took much of his humor from his childhood-growing up with an alcoholic father. He once said, "You will either deal with your issues, or you will deal with NOT dealing with them." How long are you going to deal with NOT dealing with your anxiety issues?

Change causes anxiety, even Good changes. Keep in mind that even when we deal with problems other than our anxiety, we can expect to feel a little more anxious. Allow yourself to be human!

Second, many feel that this program is their last resort. They tell us they have tried everything else, and fear that if this doesn't help they will have run out of options. That mis-belief will understandably raise one's anxiety level. This kind of thinking (Negative) adds too much pressure. Begin the practice of challenging your thoughts-the ones that make you feel bad. How do you Know you've tried EVERYthing? Let this thought go; replace it with encouragement. Ease up on yourself, talk kindly, compassionately, and watch out for all or nothing thinking.

In addition, we have noted over the years that it is difficult for some to take the Risk of getting excited. Some fear they will get all "revved up" and then be disappointed. I always ask, "What's your alternative? Do you choose to stay the way you are? Do you continue doing what you've been doing? (To expect things to change when you don't change your behavior has Never worked.) Do you give up?" NO! To give up is just an excuse not to do the work. You have any number of people praying and rooting for you. (there are 60 over here! Smiler) As Ken says on one of the tapes, "Put your foot through that wall of anxiety."

Some people have more anxiety when they see that there is no magic wand in the bottom of the box. Smiler They tell us they've suffered for years and deserve instant recovery. They tell us it isn't Fair that they have to work at recovery, listen to tapes, read and do some homework. My response, "Working on the program is a lot easier than trying to exist with this condition."

Whatever your reason for extra anxiety for a short time, it is important that you realize that within the first week or two some extra anxiety is NORMAL for many of us and will pass as we learn how to Manage our lives differently and change our thinking.

Recovery from stress, anxiety and the associated depression can be challenging, simply because it's an unknown. Where's the picture of ME (the Real Me) withOUT anxiety? What will it feel like to be ALIVE and functioning without anxiety? Good Grief! What have we gotten ourselves into?!

Thanks for the wonderful support Carolyn. I have had some increased anxiety, but am trying to use the tools in the program to defuse them. My biggest problem is wanting this over with..NOW. Yesterday would have been better. I'm guilty of doing too much at first and then losing hope and causing myself more problems. Like a kid with a new toy...I went thru the whole box. I haven't listened to everything but I've heard enough to know that this is the program for me and its worth the money they are charging. Plus I have already learned a tremendous amount about myself.

Hey Carolyn, thanks for checking on me!! It means a lot!! I'm doing pretty good. We have had some domestic things happening that needed my attention. I have still been listening to my tapes, am behind in the workbook, but plan to continue.

I went shopping today, nothing major, still avoiding Wal-mart, but at both stops today the anxiety was non existant. I did have some anxiety before leaving the house but I calmed myself down and used some positive self talk..than had a chuckle about the insanity of all of this.

Thanks again for checking
I'll be back posting soon.
Vicki

Hello Carolyn, Thanks for checking in with me..makes me feel important. Smiler. Things have been pretty good. I get migraines on a regular basis and when they are finished with me I get really anxious. The first part of the week I was down with migraines but since Tuesday I have been steadily getting back on track. I posted a while back that I was starting the program over and have done just that. It has been great!!! I'm so thankful for this program.
Have a great day
Vicki

hello Vickijean I was wondering if you smoke or drink alot of caffine . Because that used to effect my migraines. Now that I've quit those things there not as bad. Or offen. My dr gave me a perscription for them but the side effects are way to scarey for me. I don't know what she was thinking. Anyway it always helped me when I could take some advil and lay down for an hour or so in thae dark. away from noise. I hope this can help out with that I know how bad they get . jaime

Hi jaimek, So do you still have migraines? I gave up coffee, tea, pop, sugar, processed foods several years ago, but I have not given up smoking yet. I smoke natual cigs ( they are legal Smiler) that don't have all the chemicals in them that most brands have. I am allergic to food perservatives like msg and just when I think I've prepared a healthy safe food to eat I find sodium benzoate in the butter or even worse in my meds!!! Even herbal suplements have maltradextrine in them...bad stuff for me. I also just take advil cuz the other meds are too scary and most of them have caffine in them.

Some of the headaches could be hormonal..so maybe when I go thru the change they will ease up.

Hey thanks for the post. Do your migraines cause anxiety?
Vicki

Well my migraines used to cause alot of anxiety. I used to think what if I have a brain tummor. But I don't think that anymore. My dr. told me to take excedrine. I didn't know that had caffine in it. I always had panic attacks when I took it. But when I quit smoking I only get headachs once in a while, I rarely ever get migraines anymore. JAIME

Wow, jaimek, you gave up a lot of things to get healthy! Good for you...nice that you got such a great payoff in that the headaches are rare.

Ok, vicki, when is that quit date? Smiler It's the hardest thing I ever gave up...but I'm glad I did it. C.

C, getting back to my post and you 'help' I am toexplain my analogy. As we bring to the surface these anxieties we,ve held they might not appear so pretty (hense, blemishes) but they working their way out.

I now like to use "peeling the layers of an onion" as an analogy for surfacing what has been deep within me, but every time I think of the layers of an onion, it makes me cry! lol, src
