This is embarassing but...

I know constipation and diarrhea are common IBS symptoms but is it possible to be constipated AND then have diarrhea in the same day?

I've developed a new philosophy... I only dread one day at a time.

Hi there. I also think I have IBS symptoms. Over the past several days I've just had gas, bloating and the big "D". I read up on it and as I understand it there are three forms of IBS: IBS-C (Constipation), IBS-D (Diarrhea) and IBS-A (alternates between C and D).

I just am hoping that I can get over this as it is awful stuff to have. I'm thinking it's the stress and anxiety I'm under presently.

Hopefully, others with more knowledge will give us both some info. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

Take care!

That's exactly what happened Sporadic. I was constipated for a few days and then exactly what you said happened.

I haven't slept AT ALL because I was running to the toilet every 5 minutes. Now today I'm an anxious mess and of course I'm doing the "what if" thinking... wondering what I'm dying of this time.

I have IBS -A too. My Dr explained it very well. When you are constipated your body produces a mucus that breaks down the BM to help it pass. when you have IBS your body can have C or just think you have C due to the intestine spasm. this mucus is the same that causes D so this is why you switch back and forth betwen the two.
I am on an IBS medication called Nulev. It is not something you take daily but as needed. I only take it when I am having pain cause by the IBS. It relaxes the muscle spasms in the colon. Really the best thing for IBS is fiber. It is uncomfortable at first when yur body is not used to it as it can make you gassy but once you are used to it it really helps reduce the IBS symptoms.

good lord kp, er, good non-demoniational higher power being kp, haha. 3 times in a month? thats crazy! it must have been nice to not hafta worry about going to the bathroom and i bet you saved some money on toilet paper, lol.

brooke, i dunno if i get C and D with IBS, but, i do have those things happen every so often. i think its cuz i eat good then bad then good etc... so, i eat stuff that makes me get the C, then i'll eat wendys, get the D, but the D can't get past the C, so i get D cramps, make a big C after a day, then the D takes over cuz the C is out of the way. C and D suck. i want N, normal.

and the med i got perscribed was bentyl or some junk. i dunno, i didn't fill it. he wanted me to take a pill 4 times a day for 2 weeks, then down to 3 pills a day for a month, 2 a day for a month, 1/d for a month etc. F that, way too many pills, lol. i need to chill myself out and not get so pissed sometimes. i should post my food journal and i bet you'll all be shocked at what i eat with "IBS-D." i wonder if IBS can be 100% stress triggered. if so, thats what i got, lol.

Christinaluck- what meds are you talking about? My doctor finally and very reluctantly put me on Donnatal but it gave me terrible headaches so I quit taking it. I've been suffering from IBS for 8 years now and nothing has helped and I've changed my diet to the point that what's the point of eating anymore. I don't drink caffeinated drinks, drink mostly water and my one cup of decaf coffee in the morning, still I wake up very early in the morning wth a headache, stomache ache and nausea then the bm's start coming. Needless to say mornings are really bad for me and right now it's not a big problem because I'm home but when the kids start school I will be the official "Mom Taxi" and I don't know what to do. I need help!!

My bowels laugh at pepto bismal and even immodium. If I take immodium it will stop the D but my stomach will hurt all day.

I also suffer from the painful uncomfortable bouts of IBS Smiler I take Zelnorm and I know us anxiety suffers do not like meds-however I had both constipation and "D"Smiler nice huh? the Zelnorm helped out soooo much and now I am off of it and back to the "normal" (I don;t really like that word but whatever) way that it is supposed to be.
