I have had IBS for five years now. I now realize that it caused by anxiety. My question is : Has anyone else suffered with IBS due to anxiety? Everytime I leave the house I need to have a bowel movement. Can anyone out there relate to me ? I am most nervous on the road, something that I used to enjoy doing.

Yes, yes, yes, lots of people call or write about IBS. I hope lots of people see your posting and respond. You might want to post it in lesson 5, if you don't get several responses.

Be sure to read and listen to lesson 5 for hints regarding this.

Hi jmjm6010. I had anxiety and panic attacks for a long time. I also battled with irritable bowel syndrom. The moment I would have a panic or anxiety attack, I would get a bowel movement. I was eating imodium ad like candy. Eventually what happened to me is I got anorexic. I would get so anxious that I stopped eating, but yet I would have panic attacks and still have bowel movements even tho there wasnt anything there. This program literally saved my life. It was the last thing I tried, because I tried counseling and 5 or 6 different types of meds. I quit the meds all together and went through this program, and by the 5th chapter, my panic and anxiety attacks were completely gone. That was about 5 years ago and Im still going strong. Just wanted to let you know that you can do it and you can get better!

Hi,

I can relate. I have had IBS for as long as I can remember...plagued with it since childhood...from stress/anxiety.

What I do is I tell myself it is ok, it will pass...it always does, I use a warm heat pack on my stomach, take Imodium AD, and go on a 'BRATT' diet...Bananas, Rice, Apples, Tea, and Toast, for a few days while everything calms down. When it gets out of control and I start to lose weight...which is going on right now due to a major growth spurt I have been through...it passed and went well and I am stronger now...just taking it easy and giving myself permission too , but when it is that bad...I go to my family doctor and he puts me on Lomotil for several days and it works everytime

I have accepted that I have always had IBS, and at times I will get a flair up...that helped me a lot...just the mere acceptance of it...verses getting angry, asking, "Why Me?", getting more stressed during a flair up as that will only make it worse.

Hang in there...use your relaxation tape, eat well, get regular exercise, use the breathing technique as this helps the abdominal pain as it relaxes one and sends a message to those colonic contractions to 'take a hike'.

i just canceled my classes cause everytime i try to drive to campus, let alone anywhere else besides work or home, and i get IBS.
I am only on tape two...so i think i need to spend some more time in the program before i try to start school again. i am waking up crying because i am so sad that its so hard to go drive somewhere.

I just registered! I'm sure glad I did. I also suffer from IBS whenever I get an anxiety attack. I've only started getting these in the last year and a half. I've lost a lot of weight too because of it; since I can't eat a thing during such episodes. Although I haven't eaten, my stomach feel full like I just did eat. I use to throw up and cry all at the same time. These things are horrible.
I have yet to try Imodiom. Thanks.

Lucinda was right about the bran . For the longest time I could not eat bran due to severe stomach cramps. I went to my local health food store and bought all natural oat bran. I continue to eat small doses (1 teaspoon ) daily with orange juice and it regulates my stomach. Between working in the bran and the program itself my IBS is much better but I still have a way to go.!Go back to this tape and listen about the bran .
