ok so the other day i ate honey nut cheerios..i fell asleep for two hours..woke up with killer irritable bowel...on the side of the box it said something about whole wheat being in it or whatever so i was wondering if possibly they caused it? I've kept eating it since and nothing has happened...
Hi Soprano, I can't answer your question about Cherrios, but when my IBS was really bad, I could never pinpoint an exact food that caused it. I could eat junk food and be fine; drink a glass of water and it made me sick. Anyway, whole wheat doesn't hurt unless you have an intolerance to it. Whole grain/fibre in small amounts, built up over a period of time, will do wonders for IBS. At least this has been my experience. Roxxie
My IBS usually stems from some food (sensitivity or allergy). But I think at times it's both food and stress, but really the "winner" is wrong food. Ouch! I'm just getting over an attack of five weeks (I simply go off food and onto clear liquids). Got it under control with L. glutamine amino acid in high doses this time. I have a wonderful book on IBS and Colitis that helped me get going ten years ago to sleuth out the foods that were getting me. It's by DeLamar Gibbons, M.D. I learned SO much. He never goes into stress as many, many years of research taught him it's food or meds. His studies are simply fascinating. It's amazing just what foods and things in even toothpaste or pills (even Pepto Bismol is a killer for many as are some chewing gums) CAN do to our tender guts. I can't touch milk as the casein gets me which means no cheese, not even soy cheese. I use rice and soy milk enriched same as milk. What a PITA!!

Foods can bother for up to three days or more. I mean it can be one to three days before they hit. Other times the time can be much shorter. Probably it was something you ate 24 hours plus before and don't remember. Eating just starts the gut action, and we associate the IBS with the last food in. Think always at LEAST one to three days back by keeping a food, med, toothpaste, OTC whatever, gum, everything diary. Even stuff you never swallow (or think you don't) can "get you" in a few hours or next day. I know within about 24-36 hours when something's done me dirt. Yours probably was not Cheerios, but it's worth the Elimination Diet to find out. Takes time. I did it 20 years ago. I still have to keep food diaries as something new pops up every now and then! Oy!!! Always somethin'!!!
