I have a question. I am new to this site. I had been on Prozac for about 9 years and it was wonderful. It almost totally alleviated all of my OCD symptoms. Well, I was incredibly stupid and thought I no longer needed medication and weaned off of Prozac last October. Needless to say, my OCD came back full force (worse this time around) in March of this year. I honestly thought I was going to die. Well, after a try on Lexapro which made me tired and more depressed I went back on Prozac. I started on 20 mg eight weeks ago, went up to 40 mg six weeks ago, and now have been on 60 mg for 2 1/2 weeks. The last time I was on Prozac 40 mg the entire time. Well, I am really scared. Sometimes I feel like I am feeling better and at other times I feel awful. I know increasing the dose brings increased anxiety, etc., but should I wait with the 60 mg for an extended period of time or do you think Prozac is not working for me this time????
I want this to work again so badly. I know the meds work because it worked for 9 years. I also know I can feel better because I did feel great. Please help me!!!!!!

Hey there! Just wanted to say, hang in there! Like you said, you will feel better. Smiler

I am actually encouraged by your post, that you felt better with the prozac. I too am doing prozac (20). I did it for a couple years, and then last fall, I decided to ween down. I was at 20 and went down to 10. It's a little confusing b/c at that time I was also being treated for some endocron. stuff and I just sort of hit rock bottom again. (Hormones were likely a huge part).I went up on the prozac, but think I did so too quickly (10-40 pretty quickly)and felt even more anxious. I was desparate, felt like it wasn't working, and decided to try Paxil. Paxil made me feel super tired and out of it, but I was calmer. After all the stuff I was taking for endcocron. got straightened out, I decided to give Prozac another try. This time I went to 20. Its been a few months and I don't feel increased anxiety like I did before. In fact I am calmer and have less of an anxious reaction to most of my "scary thoughts." They are also "less sticky." However, they are still coming and that's what I don't like. I have my drs approval to try 30, and could go as far as 40. Not sure if I want to or not. I want more relief. But, also, how much is our part. I am doing counseling too, and it is helping and I know that partly I need to retrain my mind some.

Anyway... you said the prozac took your symptoms away the first time? If I were you, I might consider sticking it out, only b/c I don't think I gave it enough time. Is there any chance you can get some xanax until the Prozac kicks in? If it worked so well before, you may not want to give up just yet. Xanax may calm the anxiety that the prozac initially causes. But, I know how it feels to need relief and feel you aren't getting it fast enough.

GL to you. You WILL GET THROUGH THIS!! (Even if it doesn't seem it right now!)

Anyone else have a positive experience with Prozac for OCD?

Thanks.

I used to be on prozac for anxiety, but I guess you could say for OCD also because I obsessed over everything. It worked for me great, I don't remember why I got off it? I guess it's just one of those stupid things we do. I know on 40 mg's whenever I would bend over my heart would skip a beat, which is something you need to tell you dr I guess. By the time I mentioned it I was already off. Maybe you could back off of 60 mgs and go back to 20 or 40 for awhile. I am thinking about starting back on prozac as soon as possible. My doctor will never give me any medication I ask for by name, I don't know why. So I have to beat around the bush. I asked for lorazipam and got Vistaril, so maybe I should ask for zoloft and he will give me prozac who knows, lol..
