Last night I was laying in bed reading holistic medicine book for anxiety and I kept feeling a strange sentation in my chest/throat. Its hard to explain. I almost felt the urge to burp or maybe slightly losing my breath. I don't know if this makes sense. So.....of course my anxiety kicked into second gear, my heart started to race and the thoughts started to come....what if its my lungs or what if I am having a heart attack and all the docs are ALL wrong. I got up did some laundry and then listened to my relaxation tape and was able to fall asleep.
I don't know what that feeling was that caused my anxiety - I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same weird sensation and do you think it is just another body symptom. I have had the works done with the check ups - I am very healthy (physically) and am working on the mental part |

I know what you are talking about. I don't know what it is but I have had that sensation before. If I remember correctly I would also get like a metallic taste in my mouth when I would feel that way.

I didn't get any strange tastes just the feeling as though I needed to burp or cough or something. Maybe like my heart or lungs need to burp???? I don't really think it was my heart though.
I sure hope it was just anxiety - yet another symptom that I have to over come..... |

Hi ellkay:
Well--now wait a minute---did you by any chance eat something right before you laid down? If so, that would be a more simple expalantion as to why you felt that way. Cynthia |

No I didn't eat right before I layed down - but I did eat acouple pieces of pizza then I ran on the treadmill not long before I layed down. I normally don't work out after I eat - usually the other way around, so maybe I just gave myself indigestion, it was just a weird sensation. Again, not like a normal belch like something internal????? I don't know.... I haven't felt it since.

OMG! ellkay I can completely relate to what you felt last night cuz I am going through it right now. The burping and losing your breath...it's like you want to get the PRESSURE out of your body out of your chest. I didn't know what to do so I finally just signed up for stresscenter. I just started reading the posts and wow there are so many people that are going through what I am. Sorry but I don't know how to help you yet...just started the program this month but I wanted to let you know you touched me and have given me hope to continue this program. Thank you.

Heartburn can cause the feeling of wanting to burp. No more pizza before bed

I get the same feeling every night, I'm not sure what it is either. Just stress and all that crap I guess settling in your chest maybe? I'm currently taking protonix for reflux, and it makes me burp a lot, but that feeling isn't really connected. Don't feel worried or anything, just anxiety and the chest discomfort goes along with it

If you find out it's not due to the pizza/indigestion, you may want to try this . . .
Myself, my wife, my mother-in-law - and lots of other I know have had the same feelings, and have gotten immediate relief from our chiropractor who does an adjustment on our stomachs/hiatal (spelling?) area. Your stomach and hiatal can become "kinked" and create feelings ranging from indigestion/gas to feelings like you're having a heart attack. My mother-in-law was rushed to the hospital with severe chest pains, and the hospital ran all kinds of tests & couldn't find anything wrong. I contacted a local chiropractor who knew how to adjust the stomach/hiatal area, and when she had the adjustment the pain went immediately away. Mine usually is feelings of trapped gas/pressure in my stomach that I can't seem to release. That can also make me feel like I can't take a deep breath (which starts the panic, of course!). If I can't get to my chiropractor, I will find a chair or something else that I can lean down on to put pressure on my stomach with, then start from underneath your left side of your ribs (looking down at yourself), and gently move the pressure from left to right. This pulls the stomach from it's compressed spot down to where it should be lying. Usually all the gas/pressure releases with a nice, healthy belch! Hope this is of help to you, or someone else. |

At one point throughout my years with anxiety, I felt like there was something always in my throat. I went to the doctor and he sent me to a gastro doc who did some tests and said I was fine. He did tell me that if you have a lot of gas in your stomach, it can come up in your esophagus and give you the feeling of having some sort of pressure in your throat. I get this sometimes and i take a zantac or some tums and it usually goes away.

I use to get these same feelings and I take tums it took my step dad giving me the advise. he is a diabetic and he said that he has the same thing happen to him along with chest pain. I take the tums and it helps the acid from causing you to feel like you are having something stuck in your throat. I hope this helps!

Thank you all! Glad I am not the only one who has felt this - and it does appear to be stress related.
The only difference I think is that its wasn't in my stomach more so in my chest. I have not felt it since - It may have been self induced. Reading about anxiety some times messes with my subconscience - I start to feel strange thigns and don't know why. Then I sit back to reflect and see it seems more clear that it was probably stress. Thanks again for your thoughts and support. |

Why do we crucify ourselves? ~Tori Amos |
It's heart palpitations, I think. I used to get them when I laid down every night back in high school. Then I would only get them when I had put my worry-machine into high gear. Since starting the program, I have learned to relax and not obsess over scary thoughts, so they don't happen much anymore.
Mine were completely self/stress-induced. That's probably what it is. I always described it as a feeling like my heart had skipped a beat. I almost felt like I could MAKE it happen when I held my breath. Once I was put on medication for my diabetes, but I had to stop taking it after the 2nd day because it gave me so many heart palpitations (listed on the side effects for that and my effexor) that I thought I was going to die. I was lying in bed that night with my fiance asleep next to me and I was feeling my pulse picturing him waking up the next morning next to my dead body. If that's not anxiety, I don't know what is! I stopped taking the diabetes medication and the palpitations subsided. I've never heard of anyone dying of heart palpitations, but you could ask your doctor if that increases your risk of heart attacks. Other than that, CALM DOWN! |

Hello Ellkay,
I get this sensation alot and mine is due to my acid reflux. I dont get heartburn anymore because I am on Prilosec but I do still get the sensation that somthing is coming up my throat and then going back down. I hope this helps. P.S. Daddy Bruce thanks for the info on the Hiatal condition because the doc that diagnosed me with GERD said that I might have a hiatal hernea also is that the same thing that you described? |

I get that feeling in my throat sometimes it almost feels like something is stuck in your throat and makes it hard to breath. I think that it is only a mind thing because I get the same feelings before a panic attack. I think it is self induced and if I drink something and find something to do for a little while it will go away so there is nothing wrong with you, you were just having bad anxiety. I sometimes also get like that after eating pizza I think it is because I don't relax enough to let the food settle so I sometimes take a tums and then I get my mind off of it and it seems to help alot. I hope this helps you out.
