I'm terribly agoraphobic and I'm starting to work on my limitations. But everytime my 2 year old wants to walk around the block I feel so guilty when I can't do it. I've only been able to do it a few times in the past few weeks. I really feel like I can't be a fun Mom the way I am, and I'm worried that it's taking so long for me to deal with the agoraphobia - why can't I do it on a regular basis - I've done it before.

Susan,

If you've done it a few times, you'll do it a few more times. Your son is two; he has no idea what's going on. A two year old can happily run up and down in front of the house without going too far and be happy. Or wait until evening when your husband can take him for his walks. Do what you can and please don't worry. It only adds to the stress.

Easier said than done, I know. You could always pray for rain or do a rain dance. No walking around the block in a downpour! ;-)

It will come and you and your son will be walking all over. I never thought I would get past my front door but my son and I are walking along the lakeshore, over to the plaza to do window shopping, around the block to get a treat at the grocery store. Take your time and don't fret.

Thanks Margie.

It's great to hear from someone who was in the same place. It's also reassuring to know that I can get passed this. I'll try to be patient - but I can't wait for the day we go for a long walk!

Hi Susan. Whenever I would get really discouraged my friends would say to me, "Baby steps". It is so true. Take things slowly and each experience is a stepping stone.

Thanks Nikki. That's what I've been telling myself!

And if I make passed my next door neighbor's house, and that's it for the day - I'll be proud of myself! (I listened to session 3 again - I think I needed a reminder to think positively.)
